Math

Welcome to our Math page!

Here, you will find information about the mathematical concepts that your child is currently learning in our class.

I will also post activities and work that your child has completed with Ms. Budd, who will be delivering additional math lessons to your child three times in our five day schedule.

September and October 2014

During the first two months of school, we will work on Number Sense & Numeration and Patterning.

Here are some of the big ideas that we will touch upon for Number Sense and Numeration:

Number Sense and Numeration

1. Counting forwards and backwards
2. Recognizing and representing small numbers in a variety of ways (e.g., singing number songs, using five and ten frames to represent small amounts, reading the date in our morning message, etc.)

Here are some of the big ideas that we will touch upon for Patterning:

Patterning

1. Identifying a simple pattern.  (E.g., "This pattern goes 'horse, duck, pig, horse, duck, pig'.  The pattern rule is 'horse, duck, pig', or 'ABC'.")
2.  Extending a simple pattern.  (E.g., "I know how to finish this pattern because the pig always comes after the duck.")
3.  Creating a simple pattern.  (E.g., "I made an 'ABC' pattern by using red, blue, and green stickers!")

Number Sense

1.  Creating and decomposing small amounts (10 and 20).
2.  Recognizing small numbers and amounts.
3.  Demonstrating an understanding of cardinality (e.g., 2 comes after 1, 16 comes after 15, etc.)
4.  Counting small amounts.

November and December 2014

We will be looking at different forms of measurement (mass, height, width, distance) using standard and non-standard units (centimetres, litres, metres, feet, hands, etc.)

Some of the tools we will use to help will be:

-balance scales
-metre sticks
-rulers
-string
-stop clocks

January 2015

We have begun our unit on 2-D and 3-D shapes.

Here are some of the expectations we will be touching upon (from the Full Day Kindergarten Curriculum):

G3.1 explore, sort and compare traditional and non-traditional two dimensional shapes
G3.2 identify and describe, using common geometric terms, two dimensional shapes (e.g. . triangle) and three dimensional figures
G3.3 compose pictures, and build designs, shapes, and patterns, using two dimensional shapes, and decompose two-dimensional shapes into smaller shapes, using various tools or strategies

February 2015

We are starting our unit on Data Management.

Here are some of the expectations we will be touching upon (from the Full Day Kindergarten Curriculum) throughout this unit:

DM5.1 sort, classify, and compare objects and describe the attributes used.

DM5.2 collect objects and data and make representations of their observations, using concrete graphs.

DM5.3 respond to and pose questions about data collection and graphs.

DM5.4 use mathematical language in informal discussions to describe probability.

March-April 2015

Here are some of the expectations we will be working on with respect to Number Sense and Measurement.

NS1.6 being to use information to estimate the number in a small set
NS1.7 demonstrate an understanding of number relationships for numbers from 0 to 10 through investigation
NS1.9 use, read and represent whole numbers to 10 in a variety of meaningful contexts
NS1.11 investigate and develop strategies for composing and decomposing quantities to 10

M2.1 compare and order two or more objects according to an appropriate measure and use measurement terms
M2.2 demonstrate, through investigation, an awareness of nonstandard measuring devices and standard measuring devices and strategies for using them

May - June 2015

Here are some of the expectations that we will be working on with respect to Number Sense for the remainder of the term.

NS1.10 explore different Canadian Coins, using coin manipulatives
NS1.12 investigate addition and subtraction in everyday activities through the use of manipulatives
